Mark Carney to visit Germany, Poland, Latvia
The Prime Minister’s three-day trip comes as trade tensions and the war in Ukraine put Carney’s fledgling Liberal government to the test

OTTAWA – Strengthening ties with European allies will be the theme of the Prime Minister’s journey to Europe next week.

Departing Monday, Mark Carney will fly to Poland to speak with Polish PM Donald Tusk, as well as shake hands with Canadian troops in Warsaw, and meet with business leaders.

Officials described Poland as an important partner with Canada – particularly as the nation’s prominence within the EU increases – and remarked the trip was meant to enhance strategic partnerships in both energy and defence.
Carney will then travel to Germany on Tuesday, where he will meet new Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin.
“Canada has a good partnership with Germany,” Carney told reporters Friday.
“It’s been built up over the years, but it can be much better. I’m confident that with this chancellor and the focus of our government, it will.”

Carney first met Merz as PM in May at Pope Leo XIV’s installation in the Vatican, and again in June at the G7 summit in Alberta.
Senior PMO officials told reporters on Friday the trip will also include a roundtable with CEOs of prominent German companies, with a specific focus on critical minerals.
Canada is also expected to unveil a joint declaration of intent concerning investments and R&D in the critical mineral industry.
Senior officials described the trip as a means for Canada to “strengthen ties with our European allies” – a timely trip considering Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, and Canada seeking new trading partners amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war.

Germany is Canada’s biggest trading partner in Europe, and Germany – like Canada – is looking to diversify trade and deepen the two nation’s cooperation in defence manufacturing.
Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson will accompany Carney in Germany.
On Wednesday, Carney will fly to the Latvian capital of Riga, where he and Defence Minister David McGuinty will visit with Canadian troops involved with Operation REASSURANCE – Canada’s largest overseas mission.
Carney’s visit comes during the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Canada and Latvia.
The PM’s three-day Europe visit comes as pressures mount in Ukraine, particularly amid the failure of President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate the end of hostilities after Russia’s invasion over three-and-a-half years ago.
