Bernstein “Matt Shaw is telling you something” he said on his podcast. “I don’t want to hear empty-mouthed statements when he’s asked about it. I don’t want him to say, ‘Oh, okay, I’m just his friend or it’s just my belief.’ Don’t give me any of that bull. Have it. Have it. That’s all I want. Embrace it. Be proud of it, Matt Shaw. That’s all I want, don’t try to say that’s not it…
“If you want to go to a meeting that clearly tells me you’re proud to be among the hatemongers, the homophobes, the fascists, the racists, the flag-waving proud racists. If these are your people and it’s your job and you want to be at that proud pro-Nazi pep rally, go ahead. Go ahead. Make it a day, man. Make it a week. Whatever makes your hair slick back,” Bernstein added.

“And if you’re given permission to associate the Cubs brand and everything Chicago Cubs with these terrible, terrible people who are all proudly standing on the wrong side of history. Go ahead. Don’t act like you’re not. Don’t try to make it better. Don’t try to soften it. Stick your chin out like in the picture, you and Cubby Blue, and own it.”
Shaw and Kirk, a Cubs fan, lived in the same apartment complex at one point, and Kirk defended his decision to attend the funeral.
“My connection to Charlie was through us [Christian] Faith,” Shaw said at the time. Chicago Sun-Times. “And that’s something that motivates me every day, the reason I’m able to do what I do every day, and so it’s something that I’m extremely grateful for. If it wasn’t for my faith and the many blessings I’ve been given in my life, I wouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t be able to talk to you, I wouldn’t be able to help this team eventually go and win championships. It’s something that I really feel very, very blessed with, so no matter what the backlash is, I’m okay with it. I feel strong about my faith, and that’s what it is.” It had to happen.”
