Met Office confirms areas of England facing power cuts on Tuesday – full list | Weather | News

The Met Office has confirmed that 42 areas of England are at risk of power outages on Tuesday 26 May as thunderstorms are forecast. While adverse conditions are expected to cause disruption, a yellow weather warning for thunder has been issued for large parts of England from 3pm this afternoon until 10pm this evening. The Met Office warned that “isolated severe storms” following sunny weather could lead to rain and flash floods in some areas, and that buildings could be at risk of damage from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail and strong winds.
There is also the possibility that storms could lead to potential power outages in some areas and disruptions to services such as cell phone coverage. Households in the yellow warning area are urged to take steps to protect their properties ahead of the storm, including securing outdoor objects and structures such as sheds, fences, trampolines and bins, and preparing a flood plan and emergency flood kit.
The Met Office advice also recommends that households prepare for possible power outages by packing flashlights, batteries, mobile phone power supply and other essentials in case of a power outage.
The Met Office said: “If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding safe, enclosed shelter (such as a car). Do not take shelter under or near trees or other structures that could be struck by lightning. If you are in high ground, move to lower ground.
“Consider whether your location is at risk of flash flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Before high winds arrive, make sure any movable objects or temporary structures are securely secured. These items include trash cans, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, gazebos, sheds and fences.
“If you are driving, give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions or bus and train schedules and changing your travel plans if necessary.
“People cope better with power outages when they prepare in advance. This is easy to do; consider packing flashlights, batteries, a cell phone power pack and other essential items.”
