Sharing its latest weather forecast, the Met Office has revealed when parts of the UK will be hit by heavy showers. This comes as the country is struggling with unprecedented heatwaves, with temperatures rising above 35 degrees in May, June and July.
Much of Wales experienced exceptionally dry conditions; most areas have received less than 25 mm (1 in) of rainfall since mid-June. The situation was especially serious in the northeast; Rhyl in Denbighshire recorded just 3mm of rain in that period. Dry weather is also prevalent across the UK, with most areas seeing less than 10mm of rainfall since 15 June, with large parts of central and southern England receiving just 3mm or less. Wisley in Surrey saw no rainfall for 36 consecutive days; This has raised concerns about water scarcity, vegetation suppression and increased risk of wildfires.
But the Met Office said there were “increasing signs that more variable weather conditions will develop over the weekend and into next week”, with rainfall expected to become more widespread than recently and temperatures likely to fall to near averages in many areas.
The forecaster said: “The most notable change occurs over the weekend as the frontal system slowly moves south-eastwards across the UK.
“The northern and western parts are expected to see the first impact, with cloudy skies, showers of rain and a noticeable drop in temperature.
“Southern areas may endure slightly warmer conditions, with temperatures in the southeast potentially reaching the 20s on Saturday, but rain is expected to spread south and east on Saturday night and into Sunday.
“Sunday currently seems to be the most unstable day of the weekend. While uncertainty continues about the exact location and intensity of the precipitation, there is a possibility of heavy rain or longer-lasting rain in many regions and the emergence of more severe outbreaks in some places. Forecast details will become clear in the coming days.
Netweather senior forecaster Nick Finnis wrote in his latest blog: “High pressure looks set to retreat to the south-west on Saturday, allowing a number of frontal systems to shift south-east across the UK and Ireland, bringing showers or longer spells of rain in the south-east over the weekend, with rainfall heaviest in the north-west.
“Perhaps it could still be very warm towards the south-east on Saturday – it will be sunny the longest, while on Sunday temperatures will be more average – as the wind turns to the northwest.
“Temperatures reach the low 20s in the south and mid to high temperatures in the north on Sunday.”
