Milly Alcock says women in fan franchises face scrutiny for existing

“Supergirl” star Milly Alcock said she was preparing for public backlash ahead of the film’s June premiere because women in fan-favorite franchises often face criticism for “just existing.”
One Vanity Fair In the article released alongside the film’s final trailer, Alcock discussed the pressure of directing a beloved DC property.
He said his time on “House of the Dragon,” the sequel to the “Game of Thrones” series that launched his career, helped prepare him for the intense spotlight.

“It definitely made me realize that existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,” Alcock said of her experience on both fan-heavy series.
“We were so relieved to have this strange ownership of women’s bodies.”

Alcock said he had “crazy dreams” about standing in front of a tsunami and attributed it to his fear of directing a big superhero movie. Despite his concerns, Alcock said viewers’ reactions were out of his control.

“Of course I’m scared,” Alcock said. “Of course I want people to love me and the movie. But ultimately that’s out of my control.”

The latest “Supergirl” trailer has already been released nearly 2 million views Within the first three hours on YouTube. The film features a cameo by actor David Corenswet, who starred with Alcock in the last “Superman” movie.

Alcock stated that after starring in the critically acclaimed House of the Dragon, he initially vowed not to star in another major franchise. That changed after he was unemployed for nearly a year and feared his career would “end at 22.”

Alcock said she “forced” herself to audition for “Supergirl” and eventually landed the role. He also responded to criticism from veteran directors, including Martin Scorsese, who expressed his dislike of the superhero genre.
“Anytime there’s a new wave coming, there’s going to be criticism of it,” Alcock said. “Not every movie is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective about your taste.”
Alcock is originally from Australia and appeared in the 2025 Netflix miniseries “Sirens.” She joined the “Game of Thrones” universe as Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of “House of the Dragon”.
“Supergirl” hits theaters this June.
