Russia sparks fears of ‘Chernobyl 2’ as missile attacks threaten disaster | World | News

Experts have warned that Russia could cause a new nuclear accident in Ukraine, 40 years after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued an urgent warning following the fatal incident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, occupied by Russia.

Russia’s State Atomic Energy Agency said that a transport worker was killed in a drone attack during an operation carried out by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Russia’s state nuclear agency Rosatom described the attack as a “major tragedy” and warned that attacks on the facility endangered both human life and general security. Issuing a stern warning, the IAEA Director General said today that attacks on nuclear power plants (NPPs) or their vicinity could endanger nuclear security and “should not happen”.
