Missing Glastonbury? There’s a festival on your doorstep this weekend

Recognizing these challenges, efforts to support new music are emerging in the UK.

In Halifax, proceeds from shows at The Piece Hall, an outdoor venue that seats 6,000 people, help fund five other smaller venues.

Liverpool city council is offering grants of up to £3,000 to venues with a capacity of less than 30.

In London, the O2 and the Royal Albert Hall are donating money from ticket sales to the Music Venue Trust.

There are calls for the government to add a £1 levy. All arena and stadium shows, but so far ministers appear inclined to pursue the plan voluntarily, with major backers such as Live Nation opting out of it.

Meanwhile, this February nightclubs and community venues were excluded from the business rates relief scheme, despite the rate value of venues rising rapidly by 56% since 2017.

Tilbrook says this needs to change.

“I think there should be legal regulation [to protect venues]”Even if it’s just a reduction in VAT,” he argues.

“If there is no provision for low-key or cheaper entertainment, then these places will disappear.

“I’ve already seen this happen.”

Organized with the support of the National Lottery, Everywhere Festival will be held between 26-28 June.
