Mitch McConnell admitted to hospital, spokesperson says he’s under ‘excellent care’

Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) was hospitalized on June 14, but his office did not immediately confirm why the lawmaker needed medical attention.

“Senator McConnell was hospitalized this morning” and “is receiving excellent care,” McConnell spokesman David Popp told reporters.

One of the most influential American politicians in modern history, McConnell first joined the U.S. Senate in 1984 and served as the chamber’s Republican leader from 2007 to 2024 before being succeeded by Senator John Thune of South Dakota.

The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican announced in February last year that he would retire at the end of his term, which ends in 2027.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, speaking in Washington on May 19, 2026, was hospitalized.

McConnell has publicly struggled with his health in recent years. On two occasions in 2023, he froze while talking to reporters and fell several times, sometimes using a wheelchair as a precaution.

Before announcing his retirement last year, McConnell checked himself into the hospital on Feb. 2 “after experiencing flu-like symptoms.”
