Eli Griffith sat anxiously next to his family in a green room in the middle of Manhattan’s Javits Center on the first day of Fanatics Fest.
The Griffith family — father Joe, mother Jamie and sister Ava — had been waiting all day for Eli to meet his favorite athlete, the athlete whose name is on the Michigan Wolverines and New England Patriots jerseys.
Tom Brady.

Fox News Digital was able to speak with Eli and his family before meeting Brady. Fanatics and Make-A-Wish partnershipcontinues to deliver once-in-a-lifetime moments. Eli was “totally” nervous when asked about meeting his idol, but also felt there was a “mutual connection” due to his roots in Ann Arbor, Michigan; where Brady’s fame soared with the Wolverines before reaching the “GOAT” status that Eli points to in the NFL.
“As the day goes on, everything gets more and more surreal. It’s like this is happening and I’m imagining him walking through the door,” Eli said.

The moment finally came when Brady opened the door and the family shared the quality time together that they had been looking forward to all day.
Brady spoke with Fox News Digital after the meeting, where Eli, who had already shown his journalism skills in high school, had some questions to ask the legendary quarterback.
“He didn’t want to be a journalist. ‘I’m a journalist!’ he said. “Definitely go for it,” I said, smiling Brady. “He had seven questions for me and a lot of fun questions. He definitely took a lot of time and thought and asked a lot of good questions. A few of these things I’ve never been asked before.”

With a friendly interview, some autograph signings, and a reunion with the entire family, Brady made sure Eli’s wish came true. But the Griffith family should know that Eli’s story was also an inspiration for Brady.
“When I was a player, we did a lot of this in football training camp and we had a lot of big wishes over the years,” Brady explained. “I love being able to impact people’s lives in a positive way. A lot of these people are dealing with challenging situations, like their families and children. But they have the brightest souls and the biggest hearts, and it’s great to meet them and be inspired. They think they’re inspired by us; I think it’s the opposite.”
At the age of 14, Eli was diagnosed with an unusual heart condition. He had dilated cardiomyopathy on one side of his heart and ventricular non-compression on the other side. This was a rare genetic mutation that went unnoticed until puberty.
As a result, Eli needed a heart transplant at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.

During his hospital stay, Brady was shown a photo of Eli with a bunch of trading cards from his Michigan days spread across his chest, which Brady called “pretty awesome.”
While Brady was an inspiration, so was the entire Wolverines football team as Eli and his family struggled with their situation.
“The Michigan football team actually got a lot stronger while he was in the hospital. Players came and visited him,” Joe Griffith said. “Charles Woodson chimed in. We somehow connected through Jim Harbaugh and got a phone message from both Harbaugh and the Chargers’ punter. [JK Scott]. inside [Michigan] In the locker room, the players sent Eli a little voice message. All this kept his morale high. We were excited to have these three freshmen from the team come and visit him after he had surgery. “Everything had a lot of ups and downs, but compared to what a lot of people experience, our downs weren’t as low as they could have been.”
It was an overwhelming experience for the Griffith family as they spent time with Brady, but that only continued after their introduction on the Fanatics Fest floor. They were sitting in the front row watching Rob Gronkowski, one of Brady’s all-time favorite teammates, dunk into a dunk tank full of Raising Cane’s sauce, while Eli was right next to Brady, tossing out card packs prepared by Tom Brady at CardVault.

An experience of a lifetime for a family that has gone through struggle but whose spirit and hope have never wavered.
“There’s a lot of people who are deep down in life and we all face our own unique challenges, and he’s a great kid. What a great soul,” Brady said.
