Moment driver arrested hiding in Melbourne shopping centre dumpster after alleged police chase across city suburbs

A driver who allegedly evaded police in multiple suburbs of Melbourne’s south-east was caught hiding in a dumpster.
Footage taken by the Victoria Police Air Wing reveals the moment officers zeroed in on the man’s position as he crouched in a large bin in the loading bay of Carrum Downs shopping centre.
The 40-year-old man, wearing an orange hoodie, can be seen climbing out of a dumpster, lying on the ground and being taken into custody when he is caught by police.
Police were previously alerted to a Holden commodore allegedly “traveling erratically” at Mount Eliza, an hour south-east of Melbourne, at around 10am on Friday morning.
Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over on Gulls Way in South Frankston but it allegedly fled from police.
The Police Air Wing tracked the commodore heading towards the Carrum Downs shopping center on Halls Road; Here, police used a mix of ground patrols, eyes in the sky and security cameras to track down the man’s location.
“The Dandenong man was detained and interviewed in relation to his driving behaviour,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.
“The commodore was also detained.”
The investigation into the incident continues.
