French farmers’ union calls for day of protest

France’s largest farm union called for a day of action to protest the EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement planned with South American countries and US tariffs.

FNSEA President Arnaud Rousseau announced the planned 25 September action in an interview with Le Journal Du Dimanche on Sunday.

The union’s plans increase the pressure on the new Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, who faced protest and strike on a day called by French unions for Thursday.

“We are calling a great day of action for the international import flow against Mercosur on September 25 in all regions and Donald Trump’s taxes and rules.” He said.

The European Commission presented the EU’s trade agreement with South America’s Mercosur block in September, and seemed to soften the opposition of France with possible boundaries on imports of farm products.

He asked what he expected from Lecornu, Rousseau said: “I am waiting for Mr. Lecornu from his predecessors before: A vision that will respond to an agricultural sector drowned with suspicion, and the capacity to take action to guarantee the sovereignty of the country, especially food.”
