Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu factory worker, was killed by a gang in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh city on Thursday night after being accused of blasphemy. The incident sparked widespread condemnation.

Das worked at the Pioneer Knitted Composite Factory in the Square Masterbari area and was the main breadwinner for his family, which consisted of his disabled father, mother, wife and young child.

According to information reported by Bangladeshi news outlet Barta Bazar and local witnesses, accusations of blasphemy spread rapidly in the factory and surrounding neighborhoods, creating unrest. An angry mob attacked Das, causing fatal injuries through severe beatings. His body was then tied to a tree and burned by the crowd.

Provisional Government Issues Condemnation

Bangladesh’s interim administration issued a statement condemning the killing on Friday. The statement said, “This type of violence has no place in the new Bangladesh. Those responsible for this terrible crime will suffer the consequences.”

Seven Suspects Detained

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained seven people in connection with Das’ death. According to the government announcement made in X, RAB-14 carried out multiple operations to capture suspects.

Among those arrested was Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali, Nijum Uddin, Alomgir Hossain (38) and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46) is included.

Taslima Nasreen’s reaction

Exiled writer and activist Taslima Nasreen claimed on Saturday that Das was facing trumped-up blasphemy charges and had been failed by law enforcement despite being in custody.

Nasreen said, “Das was working as a laborer at a Bhaluka factory in Mymensingh. After a minor disagreement, his Muslim co-worker publicly leveled blasphemy charges against him. This was enough to provoke the attackers, who violently attacked Das. The police then intervened and took him into custody – supposedly under protection.” he wrote.

Response of Indian Political Leaders

Congress politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the murder a crime against humanity.

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also condemned the murder and Kalyan wrote to X: “History honors sacrifice. But today, the lands once saved by Indian sacrifice are marked with the blood of minorities.”
