“We saw extraordinary scenes in NSW public hospitals last night, with emergency services immediately involved in saving scores of lives.

“They need blood, and if you are considering an act of public service in the next 24 hours, I urge you to contact the Red Cross and show that public awareness.”

Australian Red Cross Life Blood is transporting blood bags interstate for victims of the Bondi Beach attack and is urging the public to donate more.

A spokesman for Lifeblood said the service had placed several large orders of life-threatening O-negative blood for casualty casualty hospitals in Sydney and the need remained.

“In particular, we need O-negative donors to donate immediately. Less than 7 percent of the population is O-negative, which makes this difficult,” he said.

In emergency situations, O-negative and O-positive blood are used when the patient’s blood type is unknown. In a serious trauma event or emergency, up to 100 blood donations may be needed to save just one life.
