The Seattle Seahawks picked up their eighth win of the season on Sunday, and once again star player Jaxon Smith-Njigba played a big role in the win.

But this time, Smith-Njigba, the NFL’s leader in receiving yards, made Seahawks history in the process.

Ohio State’s second-year receiver broke the single-season franchise record after collecting 167 total yards in the 30-24 victory.

Entering the game, Smith-Njigba needed 150 yards receiving to break DK Metcalf’s record of 1,303 set in 2020. Not only was it a deep touchdown connection between the two after Sam Darnold found his favorite target for a 63-yard field goal in the second quarter, but it made it very possible for Smith-Njigba to break Metcalf’s record in just his 11th game of the season.

Smith-Njigba then reached the required yardage in the third quarter, and that total is only expected to increase with six games left in the regular season.

It was clear that Smith-Njigba would be a great receiver in the league, with 100 receptions for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns in his rookie season in 2024. But there were questions entering the year about whether the offense would look the same with a new quarterback in Darnold (Geno Smith was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason).

Darnold has proven to be a good fit for Klint Kubiak’s offense, and Smith-Njigba has set a new career high in receiving touchdowns and looks set to completely break down his receptions, too.

It’s worth noting that Metcalf was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, in part because Smith-Njigba emerged as a top pass-catching option during his rookie season.

The Seahawks also announced that Smith-Njigba has entered the league record books. He currently has the fifth-most receiving yards in the Super Bowl era through the first 11 games of the season, surpassing the great Julio Jones on this list.

No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans’ offense have made things interesting lately, with Chimere Dike scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring them within six points. But Seattle’s defense, which has been a solid team all season, finally found success.

Smith-Njigba finished the game with two goals for Seattle, while Zach Charbonnet added a rushing score for the Seahawks.

Smith-Njigba will look to increase his single-season total next Sunday when the Seahawks return home to host the Minnesota Vikings.
