NFL: Why Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce could be set to retire

Travis Kelce considered retirement after the Philadelphia Eagles prevented Kansas City from winning its third straight Super Bowl last season.

He took the time to return for the final year of his contract and “take on all of this responsibility” to “see if I was motivated or if it was the best decision for me.”

Kelce confirmed he would continue a month after making his fifth Super Bowl appearance in February.

But the Chiefs have since been a shadow of their former selves and have been eliminated from playoff contention with three games left in the regular season.

Kelce’s future is one of the question marks on Kansas City’s mind as they prepare for a rebuild, and his brother Jason was asked if he had any advice during his media briefing with ESPN.

“You need to step away from the game for a while,” the 2018 Super Bowl winner with the Eagles said. “Play these three games, enjoy them, and then let it sink in. It will come to you over time.”

However, the first of Sunday’s games in Tennessee was not very enjoyable. After Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending injury the previous week, his backup, Gardner Minshew, was also injured, so the Chiefs finished the game with third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun.

The Titans earned their third win this season, 26-9, and Kelce had just one reception for six yards as Kansas City fell to a 6-9 record. Even if they win their last two games, this would still be Andy Reid’s worst record as head coach in the last 13 seasons.
