NHS radiographer banned after pulling down child’s shorts | UK | News

A radiologist working at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool has been struck off the professional register after a court found he pulled down a young patient’s shorts without her consent. An investigation found that Melbin Thankachan was unable to communicate effectively with patients due to her poor spoken English and ability to understand the language.

The court found that the former person, including what happened in September 2022 NHS The doctor “did not consult with the patient and/or family before pulling down his shorts.” In some cases, a female patient did not seek her consent before tying her apron, and another patient asked her to repeat herself over and over because they could not understand what she was saying.

Documents released by the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service showed that on another occasion, the patient did not know how to ask her mother to raise her baby.

He was also said to have been “unable to work independently and/or required the supervision of another radiographer at all times” while working at Alder Hey between 4 July 2022 and 18 December 2022.

A colleague reported incidents where Mr Thankachan spoke so quickly that he had to use his phone to type out what he wanted to say.

He also sent a “threatening email” to another colleague.

An HCPTS panel described the allegations as serious and far-reaching.

Mr Thankachan stated before the hearing that he wished to be removed from the register voluntarily.

It was decided to remove his name from the list of registered radiographers for public protection reasons.

The Panel stated that the allegations were “fully accepted and will remain on the Registrant’s record should it apply for readmission to the registry in the future.”
