Bipartisan lawmakers on the Select Committee on China accused Beijing on Tuesday of escalating tensions in the region and warned that Capitol Hill was taking note of the military demonstration around Taiwan.
The committee chairman is Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich. “As the world approaches a new year, the People’s Liberation Army’s real-time military exercises around Taiwan represent deliberate escalation by Beijing,” ranking member Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., said in a joint press release. he said.

“The purpose of these exercises is to intimidate Taiwan and other democracies in the region and undermine peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.”
Moolenaar and Krishnamoorthi’s statement came as China carried out a two-day show of force in the Taiwan Strait. The country has fired rockets into international waters around Taiwan and deployed amphibious assault ships, bombers, drones and other ships to the region.
China is holding drills all over Taiwan and halting international flights.

This is not the first time China has rattled the saber around Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory.
President Donald Trump said Monday he is not concerned about China’s show of force, adding that he has a “great relationship” with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump noted that China has been conducting naval and military exercises in the region for 20 years.

Lawmakers in the House said China’s shows of force are aimed at expanding the CCP’s influence beyond its borders.
“The Chinese Communist Party is seeking to reshape the regional order through aggression and intimidation, rehearsing coercive military scenarios and projecting power beyond its borders,” the committee said. he said.
He added that lawmakers will continue to support Taiwan.
