Nigel Farage faces inquiry over £5m gift from crypto billionaire | Nigel Farage

Nigel Farage is facing a formal investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog over a £5 million gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.

The Reform UK leader received the money weeks before announcing he would stand in the 2024 general election.

Farage said the gift, first revealed by the Guardian, was intended to cover personal security expenses and therefore did not need to be declared.

But Labor and other parties argue that MPs must declare any potentially relevant gifts or donations they have received in the 12 months before they enter parliament, and that the money from Thailand-based Harborne complies with those rules.

If the investigation finds Farage to have breached parliamentary declaration rules in a particularly serious manner, he could be suspended from the House of Commons. A suspension of 10 days or more could trigger a recall petition and potentially force him to re-fight for the Clacton seat.
