Outgoing New York Mayor Eric Adams argued that the Biden administration’s Justice Department was “enforcing the law” against the former president’s political opponents, including himself, over allegations of corruption and against President Donald Trump over issues such as mishandling of classified documents.

“I don’t think Americans should ever have to go through again what we witnessed under President Biden’s Justice Department,” Adams said during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Story” on Monday.

“You saw ordinary Americans who were fighting for their children’s education being put on watch lists, I think when you saw the raid on President Trump’s home, you saw what happened to Charlie Kirk. There had to be discussions… I think you’re seeing clear indication that under the previous administration, the Justice Department used the rule of law to go after those who disagreed with them,” he added.

Asked if he was angry about the Justice Department’s alleged arming before he was targeted, Adams said “personal experience allows us to see the abuse firsthand.”

“I have spent my entire life fighting against injustices, not only as a police officer but also as a state senator and county executive,” Adams said. “There’s a real history, a rich history, of me standing up and fighting things that the criminal justice system should never have done. Yes, that anger was there long before I was a target, but what I saw when I was mayor is truly heartbreaking, and we saw what happened to President Trump’s family.”

“If you look back at my life story, not of abuse but of criminal justice reform, you see that it goes back to a young man who was abused by law enforcement,” he continued. “And so I’ve always been a clear voice, and it’s really personalized what I’ve been fighting against for years because I’ve experienced litigation myself.”

Adams was indicted in September 2024 on federal corruption charges related to bribery, wire fraud and accepting illegal foreign campaign contributions from Turkish officials and businessmen. He denied all charges.

The mayor has insisted the case is politically motivated because of his criticism of how the Biden administration has handled illegal immigration, but prosecutors for the Southern District of New York said in court filings that the investigation began in September 2021, before Adams’ public criticism of the government’s immigration policies or his victory in the mayoral election.

The charges were dropped earlier this year at the request of the Trump administration.

Adams is set to leave his post at the beginning of the new year, when Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will be sworn in.
