Ernakulam reports highest number of influenza infections in Kerala

Ernakulam reported the highest number of cases of flu infection in Kerala. According to data from the Ministry of Health, 128 cases were recorded in the region last month alone; this was the highest number of cases in the state. A total of 340 cases and two deaths were reported in November, one each in Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram. The region accounts for 37.65% of the state’s total cases for the month.
Dr., organizer of the research cell of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Kerala. “Kochi’s position as a major travel hub makes this model expected,” said Rajeev Jayadevan. He added that with the arrival of winter, flu activity increases worldwide and India is no exception. Commonly circulating strains are H1N1, H3N2, and Influenza B.
“While H1N1 infections are more common in the West during the summer months, the winter months see a spike in a different subclade of H3N2, known as Subclade K, which carries several new mutations. This is now dominant globally. We do not yet know exactly which strains of flu are causing the cases in Kerala, but with a large foreign population and heavy travel, the State is naturally exposed. Viruses travel with humans. As global flu increases, India will see the same trend.” Dr. Jayadevan said:
Elderly people are at risk
Although the H3N2 variant currently circulating is different from the usual H3N2 strain covered by the vaccine, vaccination may reduce the severity and need for hospitalization. He said Kerala has a higher proportion of older adults needing specialized care.
“The flu is not the same as a cold. The disease caused by H3N2 tends to be more severe but is treatable. Older adults and those with comorbidities should be especially careful, avoid closed and crowded areas, and use a mask when appropriate.”
