Huge fire in Croatia’s capital destroys landmark tower

A massive fire broke out at a landmark skyscraper in the city center of Croatia’s capital Zagreb, destroying the building almost completely but causing no casualties.

The building was called the Vjesnik tower after a popular newspaper published there until 12 years ago.

Croatian media said the fire started near the top of the 16-storey building and quickly spread downwards, preventing 100 firefighters from getting inside.

The building was almost completely empty when the fire broke out around midnight Monday.

The fire appeared to be extinguished by noon Tuesday, although the metal and concrete structure was still smoldering.

Zagreb mayor Tomislav Tomasevic said: “From what I see on the site and inside the building, the damage is unfortunately total, but I believe that the state and other owners will start the renovation of the building in this important point of our city as soon as possible.” he said.

The Index portal stated that it was reported that some parts of the building fell due to the fire, and that the fire appeared to have spread through the ventilation shafts.
