One dead, 14 hospitalised after suspected food poisoning at New Year party in Hyderabad

One person died and at least 14 people were hospitalized after they complained of stomach pain and restlessness following the community New Year celebration held at Bhavani Nagar in Jagadgirigutta on Wednesday night (December 31, 2025).

The deceased was identified as 53-year-old Pandu, a resident of Bhavani Nagar. Other people showing similar symptoms were taken to nearby hospitals and treated.

According to Jagadgirigutta Superintendent B. Venkatesham, residents had organized a local New Year party where chicken and fish were cooked and liquor was consumed. “Pandu reportedly died in his sleep due to suspected food poisoning. Others woke up feeling unwell,” the inspector said.

The police registered a case under Section 194 (suspicious death) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). While the body was sent for autopsy, food samples were sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) for analysis.
