One man is dead and three others are in hospital after a devastating explosion at an industrial site.

Police rushed to the scene of a ‘suspicious explosion’ on Brunel Road in Bedford on Thursday afternoon.

Bedfordshire Police said the suspicious explosion destroyed an industrial unit before officers arrived at around 3.50pm.

A police spokesman said: “One person died at the scene and three others were taken to hospital to receive medical treatment.”

A local resident posted online: “It was like a bomb exploding.”

A cordon was established, which has now been removed.

Officers remain at the scene ahead of an investigation launched by the Health and Safety Executive.

Roads in the area were initially closed but have now reopened.
