One person reported killed as earthquake strikes Peru

A powerful earthquake occurred in southwestern Peru, killing at least one person and injuring many others.

While the Peruvian Institute of Geophysics (IGP) determined the magnitude of the earthquake as 5.1, the US Geological Survey gave the magnitude of the earthquake as 5.5.

According to the IGP, the tremor occurred at a depth of 24 kilometers at around 21.24 south of the town of Chupaca in the province of the same name in the Junin region.

Initial media reports stated that many buildings had collapsed in the affected area. At least one death and several injuries were reported.

The Andean country is subject to frequent earthquakes due to the convergence of several tectonic plates.

Peru, along with Chile and Ecuador, is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most seismically active region in the world.
