Paid parental leave extended; Labor strikes tax deal with Greens; Iran-US disagree on nuclear inspections

Good morning and welcome to our live broadcast of national news. Wednesday, June 24th. I’m Amber Schultz and I’ll keep you updated with today’s news.

Here are the main headlines of the day.

NDIS report delayed: A report into the overhaul of the National Disability Insurance Scheme is likely to be delayed for a third time, with a longer eight-week investigation taking place after Labor struck a deal with the Greens. Proposed reforms for the $56 million program include reducing the number of participants by 160,000 by 2030.

Paid parental leave extended: The government will extend paid parental leave from July 1, allowing families to benefit from up to 26 weeks (six months) at higher pay. Parents will now receive $1,004 per week. More families also become eligible as the family income limit increases to $386,525.

Inflation is expected to rise: Despite the decrease in fuel prices, inflation is expected to increase. Inflation data expected today may increase by 0.1 percent due to the reflection of high input costs on businesses resulting from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in March.

UN Peace Force withdrew from Lebanon: UN peacekeepers, under pressure from the United States, are withdrawing from southern Lebanon, where they have served for more than 50 years. The UN maritime agency is also putting in place an evacuation plan that would allow around 11,000 sailors stranded on ships in the Gulf to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that Iran accepted nuclear inspections, but Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian denied this.
