Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed on Cyprus on Sunday, June 15th and pointed out his first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country for more than twenty years. This visit is the first stop in the three -national tour, which will include Canada and then Croatia, where he will attend the G7 summit. PM Modi’s trip to Cyprus is seen as a strategic movement, especially due to the increasing proximity between Türkiye and Pakistan. Cyprus and Türkiye have long -term tensions, and India’s growing ties with Cyprus are seen as a diplomatic message to Ankara.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will meet with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia, for example in Nicosia. In addition, an event in Limassol is planned to appeal to business leaders.

Why is Cyprus important for India?

Cyprus, a member of the European Union, is located in the Eastern Mediterranean. Although geographically in Asia, it has close political and economic ties with Europe. In 1960, the country gained independence from England, but soon encountered internal conflicts between Greek and Turkish communities. This led to a part of the island in 1974 after Türkiye’s military intervention. Since then, the northeast has been operating as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a separation region known only by Türkiye.

India has strong and friendly ties with Cyprus. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Cyprus as a “reliable friend çocuk who supports India’s position on various global platforms. Cyprus supported India’s Permanent Chair offer at the United Nations Security Council and supported the India-US civilian nuclear agreement.

On the other hand, Türkiye took an hostile attitude towards India on issues such as Kashmir. Türkiye has explicitly supported Pakistan in international forums, and Indian officials believe that Turkish -made drones are used in cross -border attacks by Pakistan.

According to Indian Express, Cyprus, apart from politics, is important for India’s future economic plans. The location makes an important connection in the Indian-Middle-Europe economic corridor (IMEC), which aims to strengthen trade and transportation between India and Europe. Cyprus is expected to regulate the Presidency of the European Union Council at the beginning of 2026, which has become an important ally for India’s social assistance to Europe.
