Pakistan Army Breaking its silence on the intense clashes that took place overnight on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, PTI reported that at least 23 Pakistani soldiers and more than 200 Taliban and affiliated terrorists were killed. Earlier, Kabul claimed that 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 30 others were injured during retaliatory operations. Tensions escalated between the two neighbors over mutual accusations of cross-border attacks. The statement stated that the “serious provocation” took place during the Taliban Foreign Minister’s visit to India.
What did the Pakistan Army say?
In the statement made by the army, it was stated that on the night of October 11-12, the Afghan Taliban and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) “launched an unprovoked attack on Pakistan along the Pakistan-Afghan border.” The “cowardly act”, which included cross-border firing and several physical raids, was said to be aimed at destabilizing border areas to facilitate terrorism and advance terrorists’ “nefarious plans”.
The statement stated that Pakistani troops “decisively repelled the attack along the border and inflicted heavy losses on the Harjis (TTP terrorists) affiliated with the Taliban Forces” and that the security forces carried out precision attacks and physical raids on Taliban camps, police stations and terrorist training facilities in Afghan territory.
Pakistan Prime Minister enters into conflict with Afghanistan
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said there would be “no compromise” on Pakistan’s sovereignty and praised the army’s “appropriate” response, which destroyed “several” Afghan outposts overnight. Sharif praised the professional skill and decisive action of the Pakistan Army under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and warned that “an appropriate and effective response will be given to every provocation”.
