Pakistan’s ugliest truth has finally come to light and it is nothing short of devastating. The Sindh Child Labor Survey 2023-2024, conducted by the Provincial Labor Department in collaboration with UNICEF, has revealed, for the first time in three decades, a crisis so massive and brutal that it has embarrassed the entire nation.

The numbers are heartbreaking. Almost 65 percent of the 1.3 million child workers, that is, almost two out of every three people, are slaving away in Pakistan’s agricultural fields under the scorching sun that burned away their youth.
Another 12.4 percent work in production units, breathing toxic fumes and operating deadly machines; 10.8 percent stand behind store counters when they should be sitting behind school desks.
The survey shows that one in ten children aged 5-17 in Sindh is a child labourer. While boys are most affected with 13.7 percent, this rate for girls is 6.6 percent. In some districts, the situation resembles the apocalypse. In Sujawal, 35 percent of children work, while in Tharparkar, a quarter of them work. These places have become the graveyard of childhood.
Danger, Death and Daily Despair
For half of working children aged 10-17, the workplace itself poses a threat to their lives. They carry crushing loads that bend their growing spines (29.8 percent), work in extreme heat that would break adult men (28.1 percent), and are subjected to physical or verbal abuse (17.5 percent). Almost 44 percent reported exhaustion or injury, their little bodies giving out before they had a chance to strengthen.
Education Destroyed, Futures Stolen
The cost of education is catastrophic. Only 41.2 percent of working children go to school, while this rate is 69.9 percent for non-working children. Among young people aged 14-17, this number drops to a shocking 29.1 percent. Pakistan is not only failing its children, it is destroying their future one school day at a time.
The Cruel Attitude of Poverty
Behind every child worker there is a family oppressed by poverty. About 44 percent of parents said they sent their children to work to supplement family income. One in three people from the poorest families has at least one working child.
The fact that child labor rates are higher even among families receiving assistance under the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) is evidence that Pakistan’s welfare system is little more than a cruel illusion.
Elite Comfort, Children’s Pain
Sindh Labor Minister Asadullah Ebro said the government will strengthen child protection laws. But words mean nothing when 1.3 million children are still in chains. While Shehbaz Sharif hosts foreign dignitaries and Asim Munir displays his military might, the children of Sindh toil in the fields and factories, invisible, silent and forgotten.
Shame of a Nation
Pakistan’s children deserve classrooms full of laughter, not factories full of tears. They deserve the right to play, not the burden of survival. Unless Pakistan’s leaders treat this as a national emergency, the darkness will spread further.
