Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is set to take strict action against students who raised ‘objectionable’ slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah at a protest inside the premises. JNU administration vows action and says universities cannot be turned into laboratories of hate
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is set to take strict action against students who raised ‘objectionable’ slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah at a protest inside the premises. This comes after a video of JNU students chanting provocative slogans ‘Modi, Shah ki kbar khudegi…’ after the Supreme Court of India denied bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.
JNU warns of suspension and ban
The JNU administration has promised action and said universities cannot be turned into laboratories of hate. In a post on JNU’s official X account, the management said, “Universities are hubs of innovation and new ideas and cannot be allowed to be turned into laboratories of hatred. Freedom of speech and expression is a fundamental right.”
JNU administration also warned that those involved in the incident would face immediate suspension, expulsion or permanent suspension from the university. “However, any form of violence, illegal behavior or anti-national activity will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Students involved in this incident will also face disciplinary action, including immediate suspension, expulsion and permanent removal from the University,” the statement said.
JNU also ordered an internal investigation. The university named several students, including current Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Aditi Mishra, and said they were identified during the programme, and alleged that the slogans were “deliberate”, “repeated” and had “the potential to seriously disrupt public order, campus harmony and security”, as reported by PTI.
Also, JNU administration held a meeting on Tuesday and will take corrective action against students found guilty.
JNUSU president’s statement
JNUSU president Aditi Mishra denied any allegation of protests targeting any person. She clarified that students hold a protest to condemn the violence that occurred on the campus on January 5, 2020. She said “All of the slogans were raised ideological and did not attack anyone personally.”
