Palma Airport flights hit by severe delays after fog descends | World | News

Passengers flying to and from Palma Airport faced serious delays today due to a rare dense fog descending on the area. Problems began to occur at the airport on the Balearic island of Majorca, popular with the British, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Spain’s airport operator AENA warned of “significant delays” earlier today as the busy summer period was about to peak due to weather conditions. Flights had to be rescheduled due to visibility problems; passengers faced delays of hours at the height of the outage.
Earlier today several passengers went to X to complain about delays; However, it was not immediately clear whether the problems on their flight were related to fog.
One wrote to Ryanair at 13.44 GMT: “Any updates on FR1169 departing Palma at 8am this morning? Departure is currently scheduled for 17:16. Passengers have been stuck at the airport for 9 hours with little communication or support.”
Asking for updates to Ryanair at 14.19 GMT, another wrote: “I have been waiting at Palma Airport since 8am for the flight to Shannon, it is now 15.20 and we have been given zero information all day, is there any way we can get an update???”
At the time of writing the issues appeared to still be affecting flights, with delays due to WizzAir, easyJet and Jet2 flights leaving the airport between 22:25 and 22:55 local time.
The weather phenomenon at the center of today’s delays is known as summer fog. Majorca Daily Bulletin It can develop along the Balearic coast due to high humidity, light night winds and the temperature difference between air and sea.
Fog settled over Majorca’s airport as the island was one of many regions in Europe experiencing a heat wave.
A hot weather warning has been issued in the southern parts of the island today.
