Panic in UK seaside town as supermarket chains could force independent shops to close | UK | News
Weymouth, the coastal town in Dorset, is home to many developing independent shops, but the increasing number of large supermarket chains can end. In Dorchester Road, there is already a Morrison, Sainsbury’s, Lidl and Aldi, and a M&S Foodhall will join them in 2027 after settling from the city center.
The owner of a local shop expressed his concern about this trend and said that the supermarket chains were “killed the street” by removing the business world from the city center. Deborah Strange, one of the independent Howlls butchers who have been ongoing for almost a century, said that having many supermarkets was “total extremism”. He said: “There are too many supermarkets in such a small area – total extremism. When I look at the shop window, I can see three.”
He told me Mail: “But we have a quality butcher and weymouth, which is run by the family, so we have loyal customers and community rallies.
“The worst thing with all these supermarkets is that they work from the city center that killed the street.
“The city center needs to repel, but when combined with ridiculous parking fees, why should everyone enter him.”
The local council responded to these concerns, saying that chains will “encourage more investment” to benefit the population of 54,000 in Weymouth.
A spokesman for a dorset council: “Giving energy to Weymouth’s economy is an important target for the Dorset Council.
“Attracting well -known brands will encourage more investment in all industrial sectors.
He continued: “Every year, there is a place for all kinds of businesses, from large citizens with a population of approximately 54,000 to the small independent independent independent independents.”
