Parolee accused of setting New York homeless hotel fire that killed 6

A man who was on parole for a grand larceny earlier this year is accused of setting fire to a hotel for homeless people in New York City, killing six people and displacing dozens of others, according to authorities.

Tyler Russell, 24, was arrested Monday and charged with six counts of second-degree murder and one count of arson in connection with the fire at the Knights Inn in Endwell, according to New York State Police.

First responders arrived at the scene around 6 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire at the hotel in Broome County. Endwell Fire crews found the building completely engulfed, with thick black smoke billowing from the front of the building and flames visible at the rear.

The fire spread quickly and police said additional fire departments and law enforcement responded to the scene to assist.

Police said at least six people died in the fire and two were transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the victims.

“First, our deepest thoughts and continued prayers are with the victims and their families affected by this morning’s tragic events. Please know that our entire department and community stands with you during this incredibly difficult time,” the Endwell Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

Police said the American Red Cross was assisting displaced guests and a temporary shelter was set up at Vestal United Methodist Church. United Way of Broome County also launched an emergency relief fund that has raised tens of thousands of dollars in donations for fire victims.

A volunteer with the Red Cross estimated that 73 people were displaced by the fire, according to the Democrat and Chronicle.

Authorities have not released a possible motive and the investigation is ongoing.

Russell served nearly two years in state prison on a grand larceny conviction before being released on parole in February, according to prison records cited by Syracuse.com.

Russell was booked into the Broome County Jail on Monday and arraigned, police said.

The Knights Inn is one of several local hotels used by the Broome County Department of Social Services to house the homeless, according to WIVT.
