Politics LIVE: Keir Starmer holding press conference after defence spending row | Politics | News

Keir Starmer is hosting a massive press conference as he goes about his business after a humiliating week. Faced with warnings that he had lost all his powers following the resignation of Defense Minister John Healey, the Prime Minister introduced a 16-year age limit on social media services.

Under 16s will be banned from various social media “at a huge moment for our country”, Downing Street said.

It follows more than 116,000 people across the UK, including 54,000 parents, responding to the Government consultation.

Previously introduced age limits in Australia covered services such as TikTok, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, X, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, Twitch and Kick. But restrictions in the UK will go further as they will also cover “romantic” chatbots and some online gaming apps.

Screen time is also expected to be limited for older teens to prevent “infinite scrolling,” where users can view new content such as videos indefinitely.

The Prime Minister makes the announcement at a Downing Street press conference before heading to France for the G7 meeting with world leaders; On the other hand, he is trying to show that he still rules the country despite the possibility of an imminent leadership struggle.
