Pattabhi Gives Anantapur GGH Ultimatum To Rectify Biomedical Waste Lapses

Anantapur: Swachh Andhra Corporation chairman K. Pattabhi Ram has directed Anantapur Government General Hospital (GGH) to correct the deficiencies in sanitation and management of the organisation’s biomedical waste within a week. Otherwise, he warned, harsh sanctions would be imposed against the institution responsible for waste disposal.
The President on Tuesday inspected the Anantapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) dump site where biomedical waste was found along with garbage removed by the Anantapur Municipal Corporation. Later, Pattabhi Ram held a review meeting at the GGH conference hall with the participation of hospital officials, AP Pollution Control Board representatives, AMC officials and biomedical waste management agency.
During the meeting, Pollution Control Board officials submitted a report highlighting deficiencies such as improper segregation of biomedical waste, non-compliance with the prescribed four-color bin system, inadequate storage facilities for organic and dry waste, poor supervision and absence of biohazard signs.
Expressing his concern, the president warned that if the institution charged with biomedical waste disposal could not correct the deficiencies within a week, it would be blacklisted. He summoned the general manager of the agency to make a statement next Thursday. Pattabhi Ram instructed the hospital management and the institution to strictly adhere to the central and state government guidelines regarding processing and disposal of biomedical waste. He directed the agency to deploy a larger vehicle and maintain a fixed daily schedule for collection of biomedical waste from the Government General Hospital.
He asked the hospital authorities to ensure segregation of waste at source, implement the prescribed color coding system and use separate cars for transportation of biomedical waste. Pattabhi Ram said he will review the compliance after a week and take stringent action if the deficiencies are not addressed by then.
