What Are Small Modular Reactors And Why China Leads, Russia Builds And India Is Racing Ahead | World News

Moscow: Global energy views are changing. Artificial intelligence, machine learning and industrial growth increases major electricity demands. Small modular reactors (SMRs) are compact nuclear energy units designed to efficiently meet this demand. SMRs typically generate electricity under 300 megawatt, which makes them suitable for different applications.

India is developing Bharat SMR, China runs the world’s largest program, and Russia is actively building and exporting these compact nuclear units.

Usually only 15-17 hectares of SMRs are efficient. Unlike traditional nuclear power plants, these reactors integrate pumps, steam generators and nuclear fuel into a single unit. Each unit can provide approximately 55 megawatt electricity and 200 megawatt thermal energy.

Uranium fuel is enriched up to 20%and remains within safe operational limits. Modular designs allow them to be mounted and easily transported by train, even by train, which makes them ideal for distant areas, islands and places based on diesel power.

Global SMR race is warming. Russia is building a land -based SMR in the Yakutia region and has agreements to supply units to Uzbekistan. China has assigned a 100 MW of land -based test SMR. Many countries, including France and the United States, develop their SMRs, but Moscow has dozens of years of experience that small reactors to ice crushers since the 1950s.

India accelerates its nuclear ambitions by 100 Gigawatt nuclear energy by 2070. Bharat SMR is developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (Barc) in Mumbai. Localization and supply chain development are priorities and are expected to expand the production and green energy capacity of private sector participation.

Security and sustainability define SMRs. These reactors combine passive and active safety systems, have tolerance to the accident and provide energy for five to six years without refueling. Faster distribution, lower capital costs and flexible applications make them ideal to strengthen AI -oriented data centers, industrial areas and island communities.

While India is working towards its nuclear target, SMRs can become an important technology by completing large -scale plants and floating reactors while supporting sustainable industrial growth.
