Person dies and child in hospital after train crashes into car

One person died and a child was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a train at a level crossing.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 08.50 on Thursday, and the child was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for treatment.

No injuries were reported to train passengers and staff.

National Rail said trains between Preston and Blackburn were canceled and coach replacement services were in place until 2pm.

A BTP spokesman said: “We are currently at the scene at the level crossing in Houghton, Lancashire, following reports at 8.50am today (25 June) that a train had crashed into a car.

“Paramedics and the fire brigade are also at the scene. There were two people in the vehicle and unfortunately one died at the scene and the other was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“At this time, no injuries have been reported from passengers on the train.”

Citizens are asked to stay away from the area.

Northern managing director Tricia Williams said: “We can confirm that at 7.51am the Colne to Preston service was involved in a collision with a car at the level crossing at Hoghton this morning.

“Our thoughts are with the person who sadly lost his life in the crash and the other passenger in the vehicle who was taken to hospital.

“We are now working to support the emergency services, Rail and Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and will fully co-operate with the investigation into what happened.”
