Perth fire: Smoke alert warning issued for metro area, hills as smog blankets city on Wednesday afternoon

Emergency WA issued a smoke alert for the metropolitan area and Hills, blanketing Perth in smoke blankets on Wednesday afternoon.

The eerie images show the city skyline hidden behind a smoke screen, as well as a cloud billowing over the Perth Hills.

The smoke is coming from prescribed burns south-east of Mundaring and safety warnings have been issued for homebound motorists.

“Smoke may affect roads in the area and drivers are asked to comply with appropriate conditions,” the warning said.

Alerts were also issued for the Bindoon Shire in the north and the City of Mandurah in the south.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO

  • Close doors and windows, turn off air conditioners.
  • If you are passing through the area, turn on your headlights and drive slowly. If you can’t see clearly, pull to the left, keep your headlights and hazard lights on and wait until the smoke clears.
  • People with asthma and pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular diseases should follow a previously prepared treatment plan.
  • If you are affected by smoke, contact your doctor or call 1800MEDICARE (1800 633 422).

The smoke is expected to dissipate on Thursday morning.
