Pet Insurance Australia reveals the most popular names for pooches in WA and across country in 2025
Luna and Teddy topped the list of the most popular pet dog names in Australia for 2025.
Pet Insurance Australia has revealed its full list of trending names for dogs, along with a mixed bag of traditional nicknames and more unique alternatives.
Western Australians followed the country’s trend of naming their fur babies Luna and Teddy, but more surprising names like Arlo and Maple also made the list.
Tasmania was an unusual state, where dog owners tended to move away from the classics and opt for unorthodox names like Kobe, Chewie and Enzo.
PIA spokeswoman Nadia Crighton said the findings revealed a particular trend that highlighted the deep emotional bond Australians share with their canine companions.
“We are seeing a real shift towards soft, comforting and very human-style names,” Ms Crighton said.
“Names like Luna, Daisy, Teddy and Milo feel warm and affectionate, you’ll easily find them on nursery school lists. It shows just how loved our pets really are.”
“Whether it’s a timeless classic like Charlie or a quirky favorite like Maple or Blaze, the way Australians name their dogs shows how deeply we care for them.”
Ms Crighton added that the data showed pet owners were attracted to names that were influenced by popular culture, were human-like in nature, were aesthetically pleasing, sounded “soft” and had a vintage appeal.
“Nouns ending in -ie, -y or -a are rapidly growing in popularity,” he added.
