Disgraced colleague Lord Mandelson faces a fine of up to £300 after he was photographed urinating on the street. The former US ambassador was photographed urinating in Notting Hill, west London, after attending a dinner with former Conservative Chancellor George Osborne last November.
Kensington and Chelsea council confirmed it was seeking to issue a fixed penalty notice to the former Labor leader over the incident, which carries a maximum fine in the borough of £300, which could be reduced to £150 if paid within 14 days. A council spokesman said: “We are considering issuing a fixed penalty notice but need to obtain a suitable address.” A fixed penalty notice is not a criminal conviction but may appear on the police’s national computer.
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has confirmed it plans to fine Lord Mandelson, The Sun newspaper first reported.
Responding to initial reports, Mandelson said: “I can only offer my profound apologies.
“I was stood up by two Uber drivers and made to stand on the street for half an hour and I was about to explode. There is nothing that can hide my shame.”
Councilor Johnny Thalassites, the council’s head of environment and planning, said: “We are aware of footage showing a prominent politician being incapacitated on one of our streets and we are investigating whether an offense has been committed.
“While we appreciate that nature can call us at the most inopportune moments, we are proud of our borough’s clean streets and wonderful venues and treating them like urinals is unacceptable.”
The incident follows Lord Mandelson’s sacking as Britain’s ambassador to the US last September over his relationship with pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died in 2019.
Scotland Yard launched a separate criminal investigation into allegations of misconduct in a public office after Lord Mandelson was accused of sharing sensitive information with Epstein in 2009 while he was business secretary.
He was arrested in February and released under investigation.
