PG First Year Student Dies By Suicide At OGH

Hyderabad: 26-year-old PG first year student Dr. Ratrawath Suresh Naik allegedly died by suicide at the PG hostel in the Osmania General Hospital premises after he called his mother Nagamani and told her that he was deliberately given long assignments and was being harassed by the elderly. He then cut off the call. “I called him back but Suresh’s phone was switched off,” Nagamani said.

After the incident, hundreds of assistant doctors, Dr. He protested against the hospital management to take strict action against those responsible for Naik’s death. Protesters placed the victim’s body in front of the injured for four hours, demanding health minister Damodar Rajanarhimha to lie down, chanting slogans.

An eastern district police team led by DCP G. Chandra Mohan, ACP M. Sudharshan and personnel from Afzalgunj police reached the spot and barricaded the mortuary and main gates and closed the entrance to all except staff and patients.

“They withdrew the protest after assuring the protesters that stern action would be taken against those responsible. Dr. Naik’s body was transferred to OGH morgue at 6.40 pm. After post-mortem examination, the body was taken to his hometown by the police,” said DCP Chandra Mohan.

Afzalgunj police registered a case of death under suspicious circumstances for which ACP Sudarshan and SHO Mohan Rao were appointed as investigating officers. A police officer announced that the case would be changed during the investigation.

HRDA expresses condolences over PG’s suicide in first year of OGH

Health Reform Doctors Association (HRDA) has expressed grief over the death of Dr Ratrawath Suresh Naik, a first-year postgraduate student in the department of general surgery at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad, Telangana, who was found dead in his hostel on Thursday morning. HRDA said it is important to raise awareness of mental health among doctors, encourage open conversations without fear of stigma, and ensure timely access to professional psychological support and counselling; as building a culture where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness.

“It is crucial that mental health is given equal importance as physical health within the medical community. Early diagnosis, support and intervention can make a significant difference and help prevent such tragedies,” the association said.
