“No advanced technology that is not based on quantum mechanics is used today, including mobile phones, cameras and fiber optic cables,” the Nobel committee said.
The announcement was made by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences at a press conference in Stockholm, Sweden.
“This was the surprise of my life, to say the least,” said Professor John Clarke, who was born in Britain and now works at the University of California at Berkeley.
