PM digs in on defence spending despite White House push

Anthony Albanese returned to calls to lift Australia’s defense expenditures despite the pressure from the United States.

NATO allies, US President Donald Trump’s calls to support, after the negotiations in the Netherlands, defense expenditures to the national gross domestic product agreed to increase.

The increase has put pressure to do the same of other US allies, and the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says that countries such as Australia should follow the case.

“If our allies in Europe and our NATO allies can do this, I think our allies and our friends in the Asia Pacific region can do so,” he said.

The Federal government agreed to increase defense expenditures from two percent of GDP to 2.3 percent by 2033/34.

The Prime Minister said that despite the disappointment of questions about whether Australia will increase the defense budget further, the current plan taken to the Federal elections will be followed.

Meeting with Mr. Rubio will be part of the negotiations between the external ministers of Nations, including Japan and India.

Four foreign ministers met in January and focused on problems in the Indo-Pacific alliance of four countries.

The Federal Opposition was also vocal in the midst of global uncertainty calling for support to the defense budget.
