As excitement increases in Malaysia, especially among the Indian diaspora, which constitutes one of the largest overseas Indian communities in the country, preparations continue at full speed. Prime Minister Modi’s visit is expected to further strengthen cooperation in trade, defence, finance, security and cultural exchanges and also strengthen people-to-people ties.

One of the most important moments of the visit will be Prime Minister Modi’s assistance to the Indian community. A major community event titled ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’ will be held in Kuala Lumpur, reflecting the strong cultural and social ties between India and Malaysia.

The event is expected to attract a large turnout with cultural performances from artists from all over Malaysia. A joint speech will be made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the meeting, and the increasing closeness in bilateral relations will be underlined.

Welcoming the visit, ASEAN India Economic Council (AIEC) Chairman Ramesh Kodammal said that the Malaysian government and people wholeheartedly embrace this event. He noted that the long-awaited visit has created widespread enthusiasm and provides an important opportunity to take Malaysia-India relations to new heights.

Kodammal added that bilateral trade stands at around US$ 20 billion in 2023-24 and is poised to grow further, along with strengthening India-ASEAN and India-Malaysia trade ties.

Members of the Indian diaspora also expressed their excitement before the visit. Recalling PM Modi’s previous visit a decade ago, one of the community members said: “His (Prime Minister Modi’s) return underscores India’s commitment to foster strong bilateral and cultural links, especially with a country that is home to one of the largest Indian-origin populations in the region.”

Delegation-level talks and Memorandum of Understanding exchange are planned to be held on Sunday.
