New Delhi: Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of AI security and research company Anthropic, held a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday. The discussion focused on India’s emerging role in shaping the global landscape of responsible and ethical AI.
The meeting comes after Anthropic announced that it will expand its presence in India with a new office to open in Bengaluru in 2026. The company aims to hire local talent and collaborate with Indian businesses, startups and non-profit organizations to leverage AI in critical sectors such as education, agriculture and healthcare, focusing on solutions that are both innovative and socially responsible.

Anthropic’s Expansion Plans in India
The company had previously announced that it would expand its global operations to India and plans to open an office in Bengaluru in early 2026.
According to the company, “Bengaluru will serve as our second office in Asia Pacific, following Tokyo, which will open in the coming months. This expansion will help us serve India’s rapidly growing AI ecosystem and reflects the growing international demand we see for Claude.”
“India is interesting because of the scale of its technical talent and the Indian government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of AI reach all areas of society, not just the concentrated segments,” Amodei said in a statement.
Dario Amodei emphasized that India’s appeal lies in its large pool of technical talent and the government’s commitment to making the benefits of AI accessible to all segments of society, not just in certain areas. He noted that there is a strong alignment between the challenges India is addressing and Anthropic’s mission, including deploying AI across multiple languages and contexts and creating frameworks for responsible and ethical governance.
Focus on Indian Languages and Inclusive AI
“India’s AI ecosystem will play a central role in how AI evolves globally and democratically, and we look forward to working with organizations in India to pave the way for how useful AI can be scaled to serve everyone,” he added.
Expansion into India also coincides with Claude’s ongoing investments in developing Hindi language capabilities.
“Building robust support for the languages and contexts that matter most to users in India will be the cornerstone of our work in the region. Claude already provides support in major Indian languages and will deliver improved performance in Hindi and nearly a dozen additional languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu,” the company said.
