Police called to four alleged attempted carjackings at Bunnings

Shoppers at Bunnings were subjected to four alleged carjacking attempts as a man and a woman tried to evade police.

The incident came to light in the Geelong suburb of Norlane on Friday afternoon after the couple were followed by police from Melbourne.

The 25-year-old woman was chased into Bunnings and charged, while the 30-year-old man remains in hospital as of Friday night.

A woman who took her baby stroller out of the car during the incident narrowly escaped injury.

A police spokesman said in a statement that officers located an allegedly stolen Haval vehicle in South Melbourne at around 1.15pm.

“Upon sighting the police it is alleged the pair walked away and officers began pursuing the vehicle along Princes Fwy towards Norlane,” the spokesman said.

“The vehicle is alleged to have pulled into the car park of a hardware store on Princes Hwy before almost colliding with a woman who was taking a baby stroller out of her car.

“The man got out of the stolen Haval and allegedly tried to hijack four separate vehicles.”

No one was physically injured and the man was arrested around 2.45pm.

Footage taken from the scene shows the man’s face covered in blood as police detained him on the tarmac outside Bunnings.

“The woman was chased by police into the hardware store and arrested a short time later,” the spokesman said.

“The 30-year-old Abbotsford man was taken to hospital under police guard and remained there.”

The woman, also from Abbotsford, was granted bail and will appear in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Saturday on charges of motor vehicle theft and drug possession.

Police will allege the Haval was stolen from the Port of Melbourne on October 6.
