POLL: Should England get bank holiday if we win World Cup? | Football | Sport

England fans up and down the country are celebrating the Three Lions’ win over DR Congo in the World Cup this evening. Thomas Tuchel’s England are now set to face Mexico in the next round of the World Cup. However, there will be no respite for fans due to the Government’s refusal to introduce an extra Bank Holiday on Monday 6 July, despite the potential for a very late start to the round of 16 tie with Mexico.

The game doesn’t start until 01:00 UK time. The Government confirmed to The Express today that there will be no extra Bank Holiday to accommodate fans standing to support England. Last month Sir Keir Starmer refused to take part in plans for a new Bank Holiday if England won the World Cup, which would take place on Monday 20 June – the day after the final on 19 June. During a gathering of world leaders at the G7 summit in France, the Prime Minister was asked whether he would declare a new public holiday if England lifted the cup.

Asked at the conference last month whether England would take a day to celebrate a potential tournament win, Sir Keir told reporters he did not want to ‘jinx’ it.

He said: “I won’t jinx the World Cup.

“But you know, the last time we won the World Cup it was a Labor government.

“And it’s clear that we’re only winning World Cups under a Labor government.

“So let’s hope this is the next opportunity.”

Meanwhile, the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government said the Government would “fully support the England team” but added that “the current bank and bank holiday model is well established.”

The Scottish Government has announced an extra Bank Holiday on Monday 15 June to celebrate Scotland kicking off their first World Cup campaign in decades.
