Popular baby product pulled from UK market over suffocation risk | UK | News

A dangerous foldable travel crib has been pulled from shelves following a warning to parents who may have already purchased the widely used product.

A safety report on the New Mummy Crib Backpack sold through Amazon, eBay, Fruugo, Joom and DH Gate led to the product being recalled.

The product is a backpack that converts into a baby travel bed with “multiple compartments.”

The government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) issued a safety alert confirming the crib had been turned away at the UK border.

OPSS describes the product as “structurally unstable” and “there are no warnings stating that it cannot be used overnight.”

The dangers highlighted reveal that although it is designed for babies to sleep on the go, there is no indication that it is unsuitable for nighttime use and poses a significant suffocation risk.

Furthermore, the baby’s “natural movements” could cause the crib to collapse or tip sideways if left in the crib overnight, potentially leading to “serious injuries.”

“The crib also comes with a cover that will completely surround and encase the baby, potentially leading to suffocation,” the report adds.

These failures mean that the product does not comply with the requirements set out in the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
