Commonwealth Games: Sean McCann, brother of Madeleine, reaches Commonwealth final

In the final, which will take place at 19.07 GMT, Australia’s 2023 world champion and fastest qualifier Sam Short, Northern Ireland’s 800 meters Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen and the last champion Elijah Winnington, as well as England and Northern Ireland’s medal hopes James Guy and Jack McMillan will take part.

McCann, who has been part of the Scottish Swimming program since his youth, will also compete in the 800m and 1500m freestyle races later in the meet.

At the British Championships earlier this year, he finished third in the 800 meter freestyle and fourth in the 1500 metres.

McCann previously competed in the 2024 Championships, which doubled as Team GB’s Olympic trials.

Speaking after qualifying on Saturday, he admitted that the Olympics were his ultimate goal.

“The Olympics are always further ahead of this step,” he said.

“Being able to represent Scotland is a good step on this path. I hope that if I train for a few more years, I can take part in the Olympics.”

Her progression to the Senior Commonwealth Games came after representing Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

There he came fifth in the 400 m freestyle and seventh in the 1,500 m freestyle.

He also competed for Great Britain at the 2025 European Open Water Championships in Croatia.
