Prince Harry arrived in the UK after a chaotic fight between his spokesman and Buckingham Palace over where the Duke will stay. The 41-year-old was previously supposed to be accompanied by his wife Meghan Markle and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, but they did not join him due to safety concerns.
It was previously reported that Harry had accepted the King’s offer to stay at Buckingham Palace, but this was later “withdrawn” and reports suggested he responded too late. Editing cannot be made due to late response.
Harry is scheduled to take part in the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games this Friday.
The event, which will take place exactly one year before the Games next summer, will be held in Birmingham. Meghan has previously appeared at multiple Invictus Games events, including the one-year countdown event to be held in Canada in 2024.
Following reports that Buckingham Palace had “withdrawn” an offer to stay at the London-based residence, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “I am aware of multiple briefings from Buckingham Palace last week that the Duke has not accepted an offer to stay at the Royal Residence.
“Following RAVEC’s decision not to ensure the safety of his family, the Duke spent the last week making alternative security arrangements. Once these arrangements were made, he was able to formally accept an offer of accommodation for him for the weekend.
“It is therefore disappointing that the proposal has been withdrawn, citing Tuesday’s decision in the Associated Newspapers Limited case.
“However, Buckingham Palace has been aware of this decision since last Thursday, so it is unclear why it withdrew at the last minute after formally accepting the offer of accommodation.”
Last week, it was reported that the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC) had rejected an application for taxpayer-funded, armed police protection during Sussex’s stay in London.
Just like Meghan, Archie and Lilibet have not traveled to the UK since 2022 due to safety concerns. It now remains unclear where Harry will stay during his visit this week.
