Professional wrestling legend William Regal encouraged in-ring competitors to learn and develop safe practices amid a series of seemingly intimidating bumps.

Regal posted a long message on social media, accompanied by an x-ray showing his bones being broken as a result of hard blows while in the ring. He has performed in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and WWE, and was a manager for All Elite Wrestling (AEW).

“I stayed away here but was warned about something that worries me today. I don’t read any comments so don’t waste your time arguing or justifying your very wrong views on this. I broke my neck twice (92/93) in the ring in ’97 and in a car accident and foolishly never told anyone. And I was properly taught how to build a bridge and not fall on my head,” he wrote to X. “This is a skill that maybe 99.9% of people have. I don’t know it anymore or I’m going to learn it.

“I somehow kept going, but I still knew all the tricks that people don’t learn anymore, they watch movies and just copy. After Misawa San got rid of his neck problem, I thought that would put an end to this nonsense, but it got worse and every time I talk to people about doing it I say ‘well it doesn’t hurt…’ Believe me, it will happen. There are people close to me now; Bryan (Danielson) suffers from his neck every day, like me. It’s a daily misery and sleep, and every other aspect of your life is beyond difficult. Although “Even though people use the term tough about me, you’ll never hear me say that because I’m not and I don’t think I am or have never been.”

Two of the scariest-looking events of this year have occurred in the last two months.

On Saturday night’s AEW episode of Full Gear, Jon Moxley gave Kyle Fletcher support from the top rope. Fletcher fell on his head.

During WWE’s Survivor Series: WarGames, CM Punk and Cody Rhodes teamed up to deliver a Doomsday Device to Bron Breakker. As Punk clotheslined Breakker, the second wrestler flipped backwards and landed on his head.

On the surface, both Fletcher and Breakker looked fine.

“The money and whatever ridiculous fame is not worth the pain or the two evenings of so-called victory you get from these ridiculous actions,” Regal continued. “The vast majority of fans don’t know the difference between a vertical suplex and a brainbuster, and it’s a much tamer move than most I’ve seen now.

“I’m 57 and I’m becoming less and less interested every day, but fame has never been my thing, so most of you who do these stupid things won’t listen to me, but I hope a few of you will. If you want a good quality of life after wrestling, quit now because that part of your life will be over before you know it, and wrestling done right is hard enough, but broken necks or death isn’t something you should think is hard or cool. That’s a stupid thought.”
